Vibrating Plate hologram 3 April 2007

Today, Andrew, Alex and I , attempted to develop the hologram of a vibrating plate. First we chose a sector on the plate we would get a hologram of. Then we scaled the sector 1 cm apart. The plate was vibrated at 232 Hz to produce a circular nodal pattern around the 8 cm mark. Hence we expect a hologram of the plate to be pretty well defined at the 8 cm mark but blurry at the 9 cm and 10 cm mark.

We made a hologram of the non-vibrating plate and develop the hologram. The plate was then vibrated at the 232 Hz frequency and the exposed to the laser. The plate was then developed.

Right now we are wating for the plates to dry.

We made three holograms today. The first was of a speaker with a sine wave of 432 Hz at high amplitude. The second was the same speaker and frequency with a very low amplitude. The third hologram was of a clear speaker at low amplitude and 432 Hz. The first hologram did not turn out, the other two have not been viewed yet.

Me and Pravesh went to check the last hologram we developed Tuesday but didn’t have time to look at. Using the new laser gave excellent results, with a very clear, 3D image of the tuning fork and quarter. I couldn’t see anything in white (fluorescent) light, but when viewed with the laser it is probably the clearest hologram we’ve created so far. When the plate is placed in the plate-holder in the wrong direction the image looks magnified.

Today we discovered the the coherence length of the diode laser we were using was less than one centimeter, and then modified our setup to use a HeNe laser instead. We created and developed one test hologram using this setup, but we have not yet looked at it (waiting for it to dry).

Today we devised a setup for taking the holograph of a tuning fork (instead of a banana). We decided to use a tuning fork because it is more similar to the vibrating plate than a banana, which does not really vibrate that much. We took two holographs and are still waiting for them to dry so we can see the results. We also tried to take pictures of the setup, but didn’t due to battery issues with the camera. We wrote the rough draft of our setup section with the tuning fork, which will need to be modified later when we switch to the vibrating plate.

Today we met for the first session of Advanced Lab during the spring semester. We opened our kit and mixed the necessary chemicals for developing our holographic plates. We then followed the step by step instructions provided in the kit and made two holograms of some quarters. We also cleaned out the other half of the darkroom.

Today Andrew and Pravesh cleaned out one half of the darkroom so that we will have a clean workspace going into the upcoming semester.

We met for an hour to discuss our project for next semester. We talked to Kevin about his previous experiences with holography. In teaching an optics lab he used holography kits available from Integraf. We haven’t decided if we will use a kit (which comes with a laser) or just buy the plates and chemicals separately and use a laser we already have. We need to talk to Andy about the available supplies. Our lab is full of junk and Andrew may work on cleaning it up while me and Pravesh are in Chicago.

Here is a basic article that looks like it could give some help in developing regular films. This page looks like it could be useful in figuring out how to make and develop holograms. Finally here is a HyperPhysics page on holography.
